On the occasion of Yakov Liberman’s 85th birthday, we want to share with you a part of his life story.
Yakov grew up in Rostov-on-Don in the Soviet Union (now Russia), together with his mother Lia. When he was 4 years old, the city was occupied by the Nazi army, and like the entire Jewish population in the area, he suffered from deprivation, hunger, and the fear of death. When the city was partly liberated by the Soviet soldiers, he and his family fled to the interior of the country.
In the 1990s, Yakov made Aliyah to Israel and moved to Jerusalem, where he lives to this day. His childhood memories motivated him to participate in and initiate many public and social activities, helping other Holocaust survivors. However, his independent work was not enough to help the high population of survivors in Jerusalem who survived the horrors of the war and the Holocaust.
That’s why in 2019, together with 11 other Holocaust survivors, he decided to establish a non-profit association, for other survivors living in Jerusalem. Today, besides Yakov, there are 18 area managers and volunteers – all Holocaust survivors, with over 1,000 members.
